Possible complications of the dental implant – at “Neatza cu Răzvan si Dani”
We discussed with Simona Bălănescu about the risks that can arise after the implant insertion surgery.
Simona Bălănescu: After the insertion of the dental implant, can complications occur?
Dr. Cazacu Corrado: Even if the success rate of the dental implant is over 96%, there are still complications that can occur immediately after surgery.
We can talk about infections that occur in the operated area, especially in cases where the addition of bone is also used. Its handling is very delicate and it is important to have a strict asepsis and antisepsis protocol. Everything should be very clean and sterile all around.
We can also talk about the lack of integration, of healing of the dental implant. This means that after 4-6 months, after waiting for the implant to heal, we find that it is not fixed in the bone. This incident occurs when the patient does not comply with the indications not to force the temporary work.
Immediately after surgery, the bone around the implant is very soft, and if we force through a hard diet, it is possible that the dental implant will not stick to the bone.
Simona Bălănescu: But in the long run, can other problems arise?
Dr Cazacu Corrado: The warning signs are when there is discomfort in the implant area or bleeding when brushing. Other signs are an unpleasant taste and inflammation of the gums. These are the signs of peri-implantitis, an infection around the implant.
It matters a lot how that dental implant was placed by the surgeon and how the work was fixed. Important aspects are also the materials used and how the teeth on the implants were adapted to the bite.
If we do not have proper hygiene, plaque adheres to the gum and inflames it.
The substances in cigarette smoke cause a contraction of the blood vessels in the area of the dental implant, which also implies a weak immune defense – implicitly infections can occur.
If we choose implants of questionable quality, there is a risk that they will fracture over time.
Simona Bălănescu: What can we do to prevent all this from happening?
Dr. Cazacu Corrado: These complications can be prevented from the moment the dental implant is inserted. The experience of the surgeon, of the team that will later put a crown on that dental implant, matters a lot. The technologies used intraoperatively and postoperatively are also important.
It is necessary to ask for more medical opinions before accepting a dental implant treatment. The doctor’s experience matters a lot to prevent all these complications.
