Teeth grinding – the condition that damages teeth

Bruxism is the involuntary grinding of the teeth, which can manifest itself both during the day and at night. Most people never find out that they suffer from bruxism, as it most often occurs during sleep. Bruxism is uncontrollable and has strong effects on dental health.  How can you tell if you suffer from bruxism?
  • If you wake up with jaw pain
  • If you notice that your tooth enamel is deteriorating
  • If you feel pressure in your facial muscles
The causes of bruxism are multiple, but among the most numerous are:
  • Everyday stress
  • Anxiety
  • lack of sleep
  • smoking or excessive alcohol consumption
  • Taking certain medicines
  • incorrect dental occlusion
Failure to treat bruxism can lead to severe complications such as cracks in tooth enamel/broken dental crowns, cavities, tooth sensitivity (hot/cold) or muscle pain in the face. This condition is, fortunately, treatable!  First of all, we need to identify the factors that trigger teeth grinding and try to eliminate them. As for emotional/mental states of anxiety, insecurity or stress, they must be treated.  Secondly, to protect the teeth, BRUXISM ALIGNERS ARE RECOMMENDED. They are made of a soft, biocompatible plastic material and are made to fit patients’ teeth perfectly. These aligners are applied before sleep on each arch and protect the teeth during sleep.
