Peri-Implantitis – Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Peri-implantitis is an inflammation with bone loss around the implant that is caused by several factors. The main cause of peri-implantitis is the wrong technique of inserting the dental implant, the design of the dental implant, the quality of the gum surrounding the dental implant, the quality of the prosthetic work fixed on it and last but not least by improper oral hygiene.

With a correct technique of the specialist doctor as well as an evaluation over time of the evolution of the bone and gums, the implant can be inserted safely without the risk of this condition.

Unfortunately, this condition is progressive, and with the help of a dental X-ray or a Computer Tomograph, the doctor will see at what stage the peri-implantitis has reached. The gum detaches from the implant in the case of peri-implantitis, and at a more advanced stage the implant becomes visible to the naked eye.

Here are the real causes of peri-implantitis

According to research conducted by the International Organization of Implantology, today three main reasons for the development of peri-implantitis can be distinguished. The first reason is the wrong technique of inserting the implant. Accompanied by poor patient hygiene, the risk of this infection is considerably higher. Also, the prosthetic work fixed by screwing is important to prevent the risk of peri-implantitis.

The treatment of peri-implantitis has been declared ineffective in 93% of cases according to studies, so the solution remains the removal of the dental implant(s) and the restoration of the procedure.

What are the first signs that are felt in the patient suffering from this condition at the dental implant

Peri-implantitis is, fortunately, not a hidden condition. It gives the patient some signs that make him contact the emergency specialist. The patient feels sensitivity to brushing and palpation or even pain in the teeth and gums. It is possible to experience bleeding gums at the touch or even for no reason. Also at the gum level, where the symptoms of peri-implantitis most often happen, the patient’s gum color may change, a sign of an unhealthy gums.Because of this, his breath becomes foul-smelling. Over time, the inserted dental implant can become visible because it begins to move from its place and can be seen with the naked eye. This mobility leads over time to the total loss of implants and fixed teeth if the patient does not solve the medical problem in time.

About dental implant maintenance

The dental implant does not have a predetermined lifespan, and the guarantee that the implant will be healthy over time differs from patient to patient. Depending on the involvement of each person and the care with which they treat their teeth, the dental implant can accompany them for as long as possible. It is recommended that in the first week after the intervention and during the temporary labors, hard foods should be avoided in favor of a semi-liquid diet. The diet involves small changes in the way food is prepared, at least until the implants heal. It is recommended to eat soups, purees and creams so as not to bruise the fixed teeth and allow the healing of the gums and implants.  It is important for smoking patients to reduce smoking or even quit this habit at least for the first two weeks. Smoking hinders the healing process and can promote the appearance of peri-implantitis.  Dental brushing after the intervention is done with a soft toothbrush and can be repeated the next day.
